Henry Hate Crown Logo

Henry Hate is a queer punk artist whose work bridges tattoo culture, leather iconography and contemporary fine art. Emerging from London’s underground and shaped by decades within queer creative networks — including work with the Tom of Finland Foundation — his practice reinterprets masculinity, desire and subcultural identity through painting, photography and drawing.

Since the late 1980s, Hate’s work has explored the tension between devotion and transgression, intimacy and performance, documenting queer experience across shifting cultural eras. His archive spans photography, figurative painting and BDSM-inflected drawing, forming a sustained visual study of male sexuality and attachment.

Alongside original artworks, limited-edition prints and artist-designed apparel extend this visual language into accessible forms for a wider collecting community. Each release is produced in small runs from the archive — once sold out, it is not repeated.

Henry Hate’s work is held in private collections internationally and continues to evolve across fine art, print and artwear.

MIXED MEDIA

Works come in an array of multiple disciplines, from classic oils and acrylics, to tattoo ink. Belgian jacquard wool tapestries.  Henry Hate weaves a contemporary twist to classical master techniques, showcasing recurring themes into his aesthetic.

  • Aesthetic: His style is a fusion of classic art, pop art, and contemporary urban/street art.

  • Recurring Themes: Much of his work grapples with religious iconography, sexuality, mass consumerism, and the misconceptions of marginalized groups, and of course, tattoo folk art. This stems from his religious upbringing, life in the military, coming out as a gay teenager during the Aids Epidemic, and being sent to a Christian conversion therapist.

  • Portraiture.  Capturing the people within Henry's world is another theme, utilizing friends, family, lovers, and tattoo clients that inspire him and the world around him.
